President's Message

It's Vintage Car Rally season again, and Irene

and I are preparing for a week long event in

Springfield, Missouri. This is billed as the

National event and runs a full week long (June

22 through 26).

We just returned from a fairly successful

Regional Rally the weekend of April 24

through 26. It was hosted in Joplin, Missouri.

In spite of missing the very first checkpoint

and earning a maximum score of 2:00 minutes

on that leg, we were able to turn it around for

the remaining two days, and finished with a

respectable Second Place trophy. Our final

time put us just 0.54 seconds out of First

Place.

Our 35 5-window coupe ran very well for the

entire event, but as the final day wore on, it

started to “whine” pretty consistently when

driven in 2nd gear. The rally requires some

very long stretches of 15 to 25 mph driving, so

the whine got to be fairly annoying. To get it

ready for the National event, we decided to

look into the “whine.” So, out comes the

transmission to look for something not quite

right. Luckily there were no teeth found in the

bottom, or any metal shavings of significance.

The end play on the second gear thrust washer

was a little excessive, and the gear also looked

like it could very slightly “wobble” on the

bushing.

Replacing the second gear bushing was a little

time consuming because the new bushing was

oversize and needed hand polishing to get it to

fit smoothly inside second gear. With an new

bushing and thrust washers, it all fits without

excessive end play, and the “wobble” is gone.

For now, the “whine” is also gone, but the

week long National rally will be the real test.

Ethanol and Your Collector Car

(Thanks to Diablo Valley RG)

Ethanol is an alcohol made from corn, other grains or sugar

cane. Used as an oxygenate in automotive fuel, it increases

octane and promotes cleaner burning. Ethanol also absorbs

water, which means it will prevent fuel lines from freezing and

limit the corrosion caused by water in the tank.

If you run your car on 20% ethanol, fuel consumption will

increase because ethanol contains less energy than gasoline.

The ethanol in E10 is also a solvent that will loosen sludge,

varnish and dirt that has built up in a fuel tank. These

contaminants, once suspended in the fuel, can clog lines and

filters as well as block carburetor jets and fuel injectors.

Additionally, hobbyists need to be careful about using ethanol

in vehicles that will be stored for long periods. Large amounts

of condensation will cause the ethanol and water to separate,

with the water sinking to the bottom of the tank where the fuel

pickup is located. Regardless of the fuel used, if vehicles are

stored, their tanks should either be empty or completely full to

reduce possible damage. As a precaution, vehicles with full

tanks should always be stored with a fuel stabilizer added.

Ethanol can also prove incompatible with older rubber

compounds. In higher concentrations, ethanol can cause

corrosion to the steel and aluminum that is often part of the

fuel systems of older vehicles.

The good news is that there are things that can be done to

prepare the collector car’s fuel system for E10.

If they haven’t been changed in the last 10-15 years, all

gaskets, seals and rubber fuel lines should be replaced with

modern materials. Any fuel filters or screens should also be

replaced or cleaned. It’s also a good idea to pull the fuel tank,

drain it, and clean it out to remove dirt and sludge before it

can be loosened by ethanol.

To combat corrosion, many shops and hobbyists use gas tank

sealers impervious to ethanol such as the product available

from Bill Hirsch Auto (www.hirschauto.com)

Other than the dirt and sludge issue, some oil industry

chemists see no reason why collector vehicles can’t run on

E10 for years. However, ethanol concentrations of greater

than 10% should never be used.

March 17, 2009

Hello to all South Central RG’s

Our first quarter face to face National Board Meeting was held in Las Vegas Nevada February 19-22nd 2009.

New board members, Lou Mraz North Central, Lynn Stringer, Central, and John Connelly, California/SW 2

were installed. New board officers President: Jerry Reichel, Vice President John McBurney,

Secretary/Treasurer Bob York were also sworn to office. Outgoing directors, Craig Gorris, Dave Graham,

and Bruce Nelson were all recognized for their service to the club.

BUSINESS MATTERS:

Our business manager, Dan Wittern submitted a very positive financial report for the year of 2008. With

the economic challenge presented in every night news broadcast, our club continues financial health.

Membership renewals continue at a strong pace with more and more folks taking advantage of the 3 year

renewal feature. Our V8 Times expenses were a bit more than budget but our editor Jerry Windle had so

much material he increased the page count of several editions resulting in the added expense. Some of the

expense was offset because of increased revenue from advertisers.

VARIOUS CLUB PROJECTS:

NATIONAL WEBSITE: One of the priorities of newly installed director John Connelly is to give our website a make over with more emphasis on dynamics and user friendly whiz bang capabilities. By

enhancing our site web visitors will be able to reference local regional group contacts, restoration manual

information, club activities calendars, membership information as well as keep their own membership info

current. We also want to promote the club on-line store more effectively. Look for sweeping changes to the

website soon.

EVENT INSURANCE: As I said in my last newsletter, our insurance coordinator-Ron Love reminds

everyone PLEASE ALLOW AMPLE TIME FOR HIM TO GENERATE INSURANCE CERTS FOR

YOUR ACTIVITIES. Our website has the insurance application forms available, simply print them, fill

them out and send to Ron. He will then forward them to our insurer.

CLUB PROMOTIONAL PROGRAMS: At various times during the meeting, the subject of promoting

our club and sustaining our membership came up. One of the promotions is the magnet program which I

reported was going well. The club has sold 32 pair of magnets (excluding the sales to the Dallas club which

served as a pilot for the program). We had extensive discussions about the future role of our website in both

accessory sales and member retention/acquisitions. A committee was formed to survey sister organizations

to be sure we are doing all we can to maintain our membership performance. We also discussed how to

capture our local RG members who have chosen not to be national members. A committee was formed to

look at various incentive programs for our regional groups who certify 100% national membership.

PLEASE REMIND EACH OF YOUR MEMBERS THAT NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP IS A

REQUIREMENT OF BELONGING TO YOUR LOCAL GROUP. I know some members of your local

group don’t care about getting the magazine but I can’t imagine why not. Anyway, we have provisions for a

casual member to belong to the national without a roster or V8-Times subscription for $5 a year. Why

bother you may ask: That is mighty cheap insurance coverage for your regional group members attending

club functions.

PUBLICATIONS:

Pre-publication sales for our 1932 two volume book have been brisk. Something close to 300 people

purchased the book. Those orders have been shipped. Since the promotional period has expired, the board

decided to include free of charge an original club 1932 book (until existing inventories are exhausted) with

any new 1932 book set purchased

The V8 Club Cookbook is still for sale. Please remind your members many of the South Central group

receipts are in the book. As far as our other publication projects, I am still working on the 37 book to reflect

some of the needed changes. We are still trying to secure publication permissions. Work is also

progressing on our other book projects now that the dust of the Grand National has settled a bit. Future

books projects include, 49-51 Merc, 52-53 Ford, preliminary planning has also begun on a 40 book redo and

a 35-36 Pickup book. Watch your V8 Times for details.

FOUNDATION NEWS: Our sister organization the Early FordV8 Foundation reported the Phase I

building is complete. As you may have seen in the V8 Times a lot of foundation property is now safely

housed in the museum Phase 1 building. The foundation is working with two of our RG’s (Ohio & Indiana)

groups to host the Central National Meet in Auburn this summer. A tour of the museum is on the agenda for

the meet.

FUTURE MEETS:

The board has awarded the following bids for national meets:

Eastern National 2009 will be held June 24-27 in Winsor Connecticut

(Registrations were 135 at the beginning of the February)

Central National 2009 will be held August 28-Sept 1 in Auburn Indiana

(Registrations were 175 at the beginning of the February)

Western National 2009 has not been awarded (no bids received)

Eastern National 2010 will be tentatively held June 24-26 in Charlotte North Carolina.

NEW BUSINESS:

2009 BUDGET: Our business manager Dan Wittern presented his conservative budget for 2009. We

anticipate printing expenses for 2 publications but we are well positioned to afford these costs. The board

approved the budget with some minor modifications for storage and advertising expenses.

NEW REGIONAL GROUP CHARTER: The Auburn Blue Oval regional group petitioned the board and

was granted a new charter after fulfilling all requirements. Their group number is 169.

2010 FACE TO FACE: Working with past president Ray Papciak and members of Montgomery County

and Houston RG’s, the board voted to hold our 2010 face to face meeting in the Houston area. I look

forward to working with these groups in getting our meeting put together. Thanks go out to these groups for

stepping forward as host.

CONTACT ME:

My job, plainly stated, is to represent the interests of your Regional Group to our National Club, specifically

at the Board of Directors level, and to let you know what is going on at the “national” level. I encourage all

of you to contact me with issues, problems, etc., so that we can work together to resolve them and keep

“V8ing” a pleasurable experience. Please don’t hesitate if you have something confronting you

individually or your RG as a whole. It is my job to try to help. You can contact me at the address above.

In 1936, the Ford Motor Company

produced six stainless steel Deluxe

Sedans in collaboration with Allegheny

Ludlum Steel – a pioneer of stainless

steel – for a campaign to expose the

public to the new metal.

Each of the original six logged at least

200,000 miles by Allegheny Ludlum

officials before “retiring” to private

ownership in 1946.

Of the six stainless steel cars that rolled

off the Ford assembly line in Detroit in

1936, four exist today.
